The death of “King Of Pop” Michael Jackson at the age of 50, from cardiac arrest/cardiopulmonary arrest on Thursday, reveals how dangerous painkillers can be. He was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. PT, Los Angeles.

The world has lost his most precious jewel due to these life-threatening painkillers (Example: Demerol). He was the one who taught the whole mankind “How to dance”. According to American Heart Association, about 300,000 Americans die due to sudden cardiac arrest outside the hospital each year. Painkillers (also known as analgesic) are diverse group of drugs that can be used in order to relieve pain (analgesia). Painkillers drugs act in several ways on the central and peripheral nervous systems.

There are generally two categories of painkillers:
  1. Narcotic
  2. Non-Narcotic
1. Narcotic:

The most commonly used Narcotic painkillers are:
  • Codeine
  • Meperidine (Demerol)
  • Morphine
  • Opiates and Opioids, are natural or artificial forms of opium
  • Propoxyphene (e.g. Darvon and Wygesic)

These drugs are usually used on a short-term basis to control severe pain.
